Shamanic Journeying and Core Shamanism for Healing, Transformation and Soul Work

For the past 10 years I have been experiencing, like a lot of you I’m sure, a palpable shift in my consciousness; an up-leveling in my awareness and ability to manifest and create the life I need in order to be in service to the better good of all. My soul’s journey has dropped me to my knees, taken me to the depths of my core wounds, cracked my heart open, humbled me, healed me, tested me, nudged me, and sometimes smacked me out of my homeostatic comfort zone. It has taught me how to heal and raise my vibration, through ritual, dance, or self guided journey in my minds eye with the elementals (earth, air, fire, and water).

As a Jungian therapist my primary methods to help my clients connect with their inner child, Higher Self, and other guides for information and healing have been guided visualizations and Shamanic journeys.

The primary difference between a guided visualization and a shamanic journey is that the later is an ancient, pre-Christianity practice that includes minimal verbal guidance along with the sound of a drum or rattle. The rhythmic percussion moves the individual being guided into the theta brainwave state which allows them to go into the subconscious realm.

The method of shamanic journeying that I speak of here is a practice originally developed by Michael Harner who had his initial shamanic training with the Conibo tribe of Eastern Peru, in the Upper Amazon in 1960-1961. He continued to study the shamanic practices from around the world. As an anthropologist, understanding the importance of ancient shamanic knowledge that the tribal peoples from around the world held, and the awareness of how these tribal cultures were quickly disappearing, Harner made it his mission to “Preserve this ancient knowledge and transmit it to future generations.” In 1979 Harner founded the Center for shamanic studies and offered workshops and trainings on Shamanic wisdom and practices, including his particular style of Shamanic Journeying, which individuals from around the world, including some of the most world renown shamanic teachers such as Sandra Ingerman have trained in.

In the shamanic journey there is typically a choice to go into the upper world, the lower world, or the middle world. The upper world is the equivalent of what some would call the Akashic field, where communication, healing, merging, or activation with ones higher self, future self, or more human like spirit guides can take place, and where parallel realities, encompassing past lives, present lifetime information, and possible future lifetimes can be accessed. The middle world is where communication, healing, merging, or activation via the elementals can take place. The lower world is where communication, healing, merging, or activation via ones current animal guide(s) can take place.

A guided visualization is mild hypnoses, a transpersonal psychotherapy technique that is essentially somatic, or embodied, in which the individual is guided via the practitioners gentle voice into safe and relaxing visuals in their minds eye, and often prompted to use their breath in order to go into the subconscious realm. In addition, the verbal guidance can be much more elaborate than a traditional shamanic journey, and can involve chakra clearings and activations, activation of ones kundalini, inner child healing, and other intuitive or planned processes led by the practitioner. What I have found to be most effective is a combination of shamanic journeying and guided visualization. Depending on my clients needs and preferences, I may do more of a traditional shamanic journey, or I may lead them through a more vividly guided journey.

Transpersonal psychotherapy has always incorporated practices like past life regression and guided visualization. But things have amped up in the field, with the emerging discoveries in quantum physics, along with the teachings of world renown Shamanism teachers like Sandra Ingerman, who has been teaching shamanism and journeying for 30 years and is also a licensed marriage and family therapist. Now practitioners like Ingerman and myself are integrating Jungian inspired soul retrieval techniques, similar to ancient shamanic practices, and traditional shamanic journeying techniques, with the well researched quantum physics theory that we live in a holographic reality. Two key concepts in regard to this holographic reality are: (1)that the past, present, and future are all happening simultaneously within the sphere of our auric field. (2)That we create our reality based on what we put our attention on and on what we expect to happen.

Some may cringe at the thought of “therapizing” shamanic journeying, but to me this is more of a breakthrough for modern day psychotherapy, a stripping away of all of the pathologising aspects of psychotherapy and getting back to the wisdom teachings that are the way of the heart. This is what Jung was on to, yet he had to be careful to keep his real passion, his personal version of shamanism under the radar of his scientific theory driven colleagues, quantifying everything in psychotherapeutic terms to appeal to the scientists, in order to (thankfully) legitimize soul work practices being used in psychotherapy. Had he not done it this way, he would have been cast out of his role as a founding father of psychotherapy and died a poor man. Had he not asserted soul work into the equation I would not be able to offer soul retrieval and journeying in my psychotherapy practice, as this would have been considered outside of my scope of practice.

In fact, Carl Jung was often described as a shaman by those who new him well. I agree, and I must say that for myself personally, it has been modern day shaman and soul workers who have been the catalyst for my deepest healing and awakening.

Another key contribution of Michael Harner was that he coined the term “core shamanism.” Core Shamanism was the type of shamanism he taught. It was based on both his shamanic training as well as knowledge from his anthropological career. Harner found that key elements of traditional, indigenous shamanism could be found worldwide and could be incorporated in the same way that one might incorporate spiritual practices such as keeping a journal, yoga or meditation. Historically, shaman from all around the world, including the Mayan and the Irish Celtic tribes, had rituals for entering into parallel realities. Shaman were typically considered doctors of the soul, often preforming soul retrieval rituals for individuals who had been through trauma, or soul loss.

Traditionally Shaman have always known to some degree about our holographic reality, believing that life is really more like a dream and that in journeying we can dream our world into being. They have always known what we as human beings are just now at the precipice of figuring out; that we are the creators of our reality. Similar to the Holodeck in Star Trek, the room where any reality that you dream of can be created. The shaman, like the modern day quantum physicist knows that what we see with our eyes closed is even more real than what we can see with our eyes open.

I find that an important aspect of an effective journeying session is for the practitioner to ask for assistance from both their own higher self and that of the the patients, and to invite in the guides who are of the light who can be of most assistance with the journey. Then it is understood that the healing is coming from these benevolent guides and both individuals higher selves and that the practitioner is merely a vessel. It is in the (either stated or implied) surrendering of the personal will of both the practitioner and the patient to their higher selves that this type of healing can take place. I have consistently witnessed profound healing and growth in my clients who are able to surrender their will to their higher self in the journeying process.

Yet another benefit of shamanic journeying is the vibrational healing that both the practitioner and patient receive. I have noticed that when I drum or rattle for a client during a journey that my own vibration gets much more elevated than when I use my voice alone. Once I introduce the drum in sessions with my clients they typically prefer Journeying with the drum over regular guided visualizations. This is likely due to the sound healing benefit and the effectiveness of the drum or rattle at getting them into the theta brain wave state which enables them to access their subconscious realm. Where we can go once we are in the subconscious realm is quite remarkable.
